抗爭者不死

去年搞了一場音樂沙龍《風雨中的歌曲》，介紹多首古今中外跟社會事件有關的歌曲，當時搜集資料時找了一首歌，覺得很值得跟觀眾分享，可惜因節目長度關係，最終沒有介紹，那首歌就是《Joe Hill》。

《Joe Hill》是一首歌，也是一個人，他出生於1879年，來自瑞典，1900年代初前往美國，追逐美國夢，可惜事與願違，不論去到何地，他一直只能從事低下的粗重工作。長期身處被壓迫的苦境，加上受左翼思想影響，令他熱衷工會運動，加入Industrial Workers of the World（IWW），為工人發聲。而他頗有音樂才華，創作了多首抗爭歌曲，使他成為一位標誌性人物，亦令他成為很多人的眼中釘……

後來Joe Hill捲入一宗謀殺案，即使案件疑點重重，他依然被判死刑，就算美國總統及瑞典大使介入，也無法挽救他的性命。儘管面對不公義審訊以及死亡，Joe Hill平淡面對，並依然心繫工運，當戰友在行刑前探望他時，他淡然說：「Don't waste any time mourning. Organize!」

1915年，Joe Hill被槍決，從容就義。

雖然Joe Hill不在人世，但他的故事沒有結束，他對工運念兹在兹的態度，感動了後來者，先有詩人Alfred Hayes以他的事蹟入詩，創作《I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night》，及後此詩被Earl Robinson配上音樂，成為新的抗爭歌曲《Joe Hill》，多年來被Pete Seeger、Joan Baez等人頌唱。歌詞完美反映Joe Hill的精神，即使他肉身已死，精神卻長存：有工運的地方，就有Joe Hill的身影（Where workers strike and organize / it’s there you’ll find Joe Hill），只要有人一息尚存，就會繼續去組織（What they can never kill / went on to organize）。
